Infrared Midi Control

  • research and composition

After some years of electronic music (tape music, then sampling and digital audio on computer), some live pieces played on midi keyboards and experimenting with a midi controller for guitar, some live electronic music for theatre and dance, I am engaging in a new research and creation direction.
An instrumental playing with sampled sounds that would develop a gestual engagement of the musician in concert and explores the relationship between gesture and music.
I shall not use any computer in concert, in order to concentrate on a very simple set consisting of two machines: a powerful digital sampler (Akaï S3200) and an infrared midi controller (Interactive Light's Dimension Beam (DB)).
I choosed this simple and limited set because DB is very cheap and reliable, software and hardware are integrated in the two machines (no computer needed in concert), according to my frequent choice of current tools that are proposed by the music industry.
An essential part of my composer's work consists of exploiting these ready to use hardware and software in a creative and personal context , though they are manufactured for an other use that is composing and playing mainstream music. This means going off their ideological limits and very often building specific instruments with these current tools and developing a special relationship to sounds and to their playing for each composition work.
Since 96, i experimented a bit with the DB : short live sequences in a musical theatre creation and a workshop for young children (5 to 8 years old).
At now, I finished to work on a musical theatre piece in which all music and sounds are played live with this sort of set.

  • Dimension Beam

Dimension Beam functions as a zone of ovoid form, a kind of virtual onion with its various layers, in which one can reflect infra-red raies.
With each layer is affected a value of a midi control parameter.
Moving some object or a part of a body in this zone produce changes of value and allows to control a sampler, in other words to start or to modify sounds, to play music by gesture, movement or displacement of objects.

  • Lili Mélodie

the theater company Mediane is using two Dimension Beams in this objects theater piece. All the sounds and music are played and controlled live with this tool.

    in the studio
the sounds were created and programmed by Bruno de Chènerilles : sound recordings and sound banks, on a S3200 and 2 Dimension Beam, Mesa 2 editor, Cubase VST.

    Lili Mélodie

Compagnie Médiane was founded in 1984 and produces object theatre pieces.

Catherine Sombsthay : conception and acting
Françoise Gerbaulet : text (in 5 european languages)

Bruno de Chènerilles : music composition

stage set : the audience (about 100 persons) is gathered around the playing area

live sound set : 2 Dimension Beam controlling 1 Akaï S2000 digital sampler
